Would you rather your shoulder get better or would you rather continue complaining about it hurting? It amazes me how many people seem to prefer the second option - at least judging from their actions. But don’t just take my word for it, this blogger has noticed the same thing:
Rotator Cuff Exercises (Warning - This link shows a somewhat gory picture of a recently surgically-treated shoulder. Beware if you’re squeamish!) If you read the post from the link above, he talks about the fact that only one in three people he knew with shoulder injuries actually sought professional treatment - at least until a year or more later and after allowing the condition to get worse and worse until they had no other choice.
In fact, some people figure it’s better to just call it quits altogether than try to rehab a shoulder injury:
GREG MADDUX BREAKS ROTATOR CUFF; HALL OF FAME PITCHER EUTHANIZED …
(Atlanta) - San Diego Padres pitcher Greg Maddux broke his rotator cuff in the fourth inning of last night’s game against his former team, the Atlanta Braves. The future Hall of Fame hurler, in obvious pain, was euthanized on the mound. …
OK, the story above is obviously a joke, and the rotator cuff is a group of muscles, not a bone, so it doesn’t “break” per se, but this story only slightly overstates the situation.
The silly part of it is, most shoulder injuries will heal if you just take care of them properly. Different injuries require different treatments, but most will heal up (without surgery) in a matter of some weeks with proper care. But if you try to ignore the problem and just live with the pain, shoulder problems tend to get worse (even moreso than most other musculoskeletal injuries). In particular, rotator cuff damage tends to progressively get worse to the point where you have little to no use of your arm at all. Once it gets to that point, you are in for a long, painful recovery, no matter how good the treatment you get is.Â
So do yourself a favor - quit complaining about your shoulder hurting and DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!! I suggest you consult with a sports chiropractor or a physical medicine doctor who specializes in shoulder injuries. Orthopedists often specialize in shoulders, but they mainly deal with surgical treatment, and you don’t want to go there unless you absolutely have to.
Stay tuned for more shoulder and rotator cuff tips.
