Natural Remedies - Are They Always Good?

Natural remedies for various health issues have become a topic of great interest in the last few years.  As people become more aware of the side-effects and disadvantages of many conventional medical interventions, there has been a shift toward using natural remedies and treatments.

But just because something is “natural”, it doesn’t mean it’s any better (safer or more effective) than a conventional medical treatment.  After all, cyanide is “natural” (it is a naturally occurring substance) and although it will permanently eliminate any health problems you might have (dead people don’t have ANY problems), it’s probably not exactly what most people are looking for.

One of the most dramatic examples of this is in the “natural” weight loss market.  Many of these products are safe and helpful, but there are some that although they may stimuate weight loss, are far from healthy.  Products containing strong stimulants are really not significantly safer than using stimulant drugs like amphetamines.  Yes, they do stimulate weight loss and make you “energetic” (which in the case of weight loss stimulants might better be described as “out of control hyper”) in the short-term, but over time wreak havoc with your adrenal glands.  After a while the adrenals can’t take the punishment anymore and begin to shut down, which leads to things like extreme chronic fatigue, inability to focus, sleep disturbances, and… major weight GAIN!

Because “natural” cannot be equated with “safe and effective”, it is highly advisable to thoroughly research any natural remedies you are considering before you begin.  Always check for things like side-effects and known interactions with any prescription medications you are taking, and follow dosing recommendations.  Stay tuned to this website for more on natural remedies.
