Yes, I know that’s a picture of a tennis ball. Yes, that’s the “remarkably effective pain relief device”. Stick with me for a minute…
Tennis balls and racquet balls make excellent self-massage tools. Have a tight, sore muscle? You can lie on the spot with a tennis ball underneath it to do your own trigger point massage therapy. For sore spots in the thigh and buttock, you can sit on the ball to place pressure on the sore spot (be careful with this if you have sciatica, as excessive pressure on the buttock area can further irritate the sciatic nerve). Alternately, you can place the ball against a wall and lean against it, rolling it across the muscle knot. Likewise, you can place the ball on the floor and roll your foot over it to produce a great foot massage.Â
While it might be preferable to get a massage from a professional massage therapist, the tennis ball is cheap, effective, and you can get the massage just about anytime, anywhere. It may not be fancy, but it gets the job done!
