Do you have health insurance? If you do, consider for a moment, is it really health insurance? Do you use it mostly for prevention and services to keep you healthy? Or, do you use it primarily to get treatment when you are sick or injured (unhealthy)? If you’re like most people, it’s probably the latter.Â
While it is true that health insurance covers some of what they call “preventive” health care services, more often than not, the coverage is actually for early detection of a health problem than for actual prevention - such as yearly checkups, mammograms, screening lab work, etc..
And although it is certainly a comfort to have health insurance, particularly if you do wind up with a serious illness or injury, it has been my experience that health insurance often creates an unhealthy mindset in many people. What happens is that many people don’t bother to invest in real preventive health services, such as nutrition and exercise counseling, massage, maintenance chiropractic and acupuncture, biofeedback, etc.. because these services are usually not covered by their insurance. Furthermore, health insurance may lull many people into a false sense of security giving them the idea that it’s not worth spending money on prevention when the cost of treating a health problem will be covered by their insurance.Â
The problem is that even the best of medical care cannot take the place of having a good diet, exercising regularly, controlling stress, and optimizing physiological function through any of a number of preventive methods. While insurance-covered healthcare is usually effective at masking the worst of one’s symptoms, it usually falls far short of really returning things to normal. Over time, the masking of symptoms allows abnormal conditions to go uncorrected, and slowly but surely create lasting damage and result in chronic health problems.Â
I’m not suggesting that you do away with your health insurance policy. My point here is simply that to really insure your health, you can’t get what you need with a contract from an insurance company. If you want to insure your health, you need to invest time, money and effort into taking good care of yourself.
