The video below has no sound, but it is pretty self-explanatory. This simple self-treatment works very well for many cases of tension headache. In addition to stimulating the acupuncture points known as GB (Gallbladder meridian) 20, it also mechanically relaxes tension in small muscles that run from the base of the skull to the upper neck.
You may find that the points are tender to the touch initially. As you rub them, the tenderness should fade at least somewhat. If the points remain tender and do not feeel better with further rubbing, I suggest consulting with a chiropractor, as the failure of the muscles to relax is an indicator of possible abnormal joint function in the upper neck. For those who are frightened of chiropractic treatment, I recommend you consider low-force chiropractic treatment, such as with the Pro-Adjuster.
