Many of my patients know that they should be eating better, but often it’s a struggle to go from the typical junk and fast food to a really good diet. The good news is that your don’t have to go from terrible to perfect overnight. Every positive change you make does count and does bring benefits with it. If you can consistently make changes in the right direction, pretty soon you’ll realize that you are actually doing a lot better with your eating habits.
1. Replace sodas with water. Again, this is not an all or nothing thing. If you drink 4 or 5 sodas per day, if you just switch to water for one or two of those, you’ve already dramatically lowered your daily intake of sugar (or potentially damaging chemical sweeteners if you drink diet sodas).Â
2. Snack on fruit, vegetables, and/or nuts, rather than chips or sweets. Again, replacing SOME of your junk-food snacks with healthier choices is better than not making any change at all. For those of you who eat most of your meals from the convenience store, they usually have fruit, and they almost all carry nuts and sunflower seeds. While heavily salted, oil-roasted nuts aren’t ideal, they have a lot more nutritional value than a bag of chips.Â
3. Grab a salad or veggie wrap once in a while. If you live off of drive-through food, once in a while take the salad option or get a wrap with lots of lettuce and tomato. If you’ll take it easy on the salad dressing, you’ve got a much healthier meal than a greasy burger and fries.Â
4. Instead of a sweet dessert, try fruit, dark chocolate, or some roasted nuts. Instead of grabbing the ice cream or cookies, once in a while try satisfying your need for an after-dinner dessert with some fresh berries, or maybe some mango, or an apple. Dark chocolate (at least 60% cacao) is a tasty treat that is relatively low in sugar and high in antioxidants. And dry roasted nuts, particularly almonds, cashews, or macadamia nuts can be a great-tasting and nutritious dessert.Â
5. Plan ahead. The downfall of many people when it comes to eating healthy is that they eat on the spur of the moment. They get busy and either grab something on the run or wind up eating drive-through or convenience store food whenever they feel hungry. If you’ll keep some healthy food choices handy, at least the option to eat healthier is more convenient. Figuring out what you’re going to have for a meal BEFORE you’re absolutely starving will make it a lot easier to follow-through as well.
